Creating opportunities - discovering talent

For 14 years, OBRAMIS, the mission company in Brazil founded by missionary Horst Krüger, has been carrying out activities in some districts of Santo Ângelo as part of the “Novos Passos” - New Steps - project. For 10 years, it has been offering support in the Rosental and Harmonia districts. The activities take place every Saturday, with the locations to be supported alternating. Since OBRAMIS does not yet have its own facility in these districts, the activities are carried out in partner premises.

During these missions, activities such as tailoring, painting tea towels, crocheting and handicrafts are offered to develop skills and offer young people and occasionally their families further qualifications. The aim is to open up alternative sources of income for the participants and their families and thus improve the life prospects of many socially disadvantaged families. These simple activities can be created from scraps of fabric donated by textile companies.

Other activities include a daily devotional program that always begins the work. In addition to generating income, this work serves to communicate the gospel and to develop the participants both spiritually and holistically.

Project goals

• Promoting and developing craft skills as an alternative income for families;
• Communicating the gospel through devotions;
• Communicating Christian principles through Bible study;
• Strengthening family ties based on biblical values.

Project method

• This project is led by missionary Frida Schorr, who occasionally receives support from volunteer Lola in the painting activities on tea towels.
• Painting tea towels is practiced. The participants use brushes and textile paints in different colors. After painting, they have the opportunity to make crocheted borders around the towels.
• There are also tailoring and sewing activities to make carpets that can be designed in different ways. This stimulates the curiosity and creativity of the participants, who can combine colors and textures to create beautiful projects for doors, kitchen and bathroom fittings.
• Fabric crafts are an ongoing activity. Participants learn to use fabric scraps to create collages on tea towels and rugs. They also work with the “Fuxico” technique, which uses small pieces of fabric and fibers to create dolls, door decorations, keychains and customized clothing.
• The supervision takes place every week in different districts: one week on Saturdays in the Rosental district, the next week in the Harmonia district. These meetings are currently held in the homes of families who provide a space for the activities.

Target group
The target group is in a situation of high social vulnerability. In this project, both students and families are supervised, each class consists of around 8 to 10 students. By procuring the necessary materials, we hope to further increase the number of students to be supervised.

Budget
To implement this project, it is necessary to invest in new sewing machines, as the machines currently in use are outdated and have been in use for over fifteen years.

As we are using a room provided by the families, there are not enough suitable tables and chairs for the planned activities. It is therefore important to purchase portable tables and chairs in order to be able to use them flexibly in the different rooms where the workshops take place.

In addition, consumables are needed for the monthly continuation of the activities, including:

• Needles;
• Fabrics;
• Paints;
• Brushes;
• Threads;
• Food.
