The Brazilian missionaries Isaac and Shirley have been working among the Kará* people since 1982. They are based in the city of Altamira, in the state of Pará, near this ethnic group.
When the two came across the settlement, the people had only been in contact with the outside world for less than two years. At that time, no one from the Kará people spoke Portuguese, so Isaac and Shirley first had to learn their language. The Kará call themselves Ugorongmo, which means "we". Isaac and Shirley analyzed the Kará language and developed an alphabet. They then created the first didactic materials and taught the Kará to read and write in their own language. This work continues to this day. Since 2016, the Kará have had their own place of worship. In addition to church services, classes are also held there. The Kará are taught both in their language and in Portuguese. In addition to this work, the Kará also learned agriculture so that they can be self-sufficient. Cashew, mango, guava, graviola and orange trees were planted, among others. They also grow various vegetables, including cassava and pumpkin. Today, the focus of Isaac and Shirley's work is mainly on translating the Bible into Kará and discipleship. The books of Jonah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, Ruth, 1 and 2 Thessalonians have already been translated and are used in church services and in small groups. Timothy and Nehemiah will soon be available. In addition to translating the Bible, songs, choruses and the like were also translated. Many songs and choruses were recorded and made available to the Kará electronically. When Isaac and Shirley met the Kará, they lived in just one village. Now there are six villages. Isaac and Shirley work mainly in the largest village (Laranjal). It is important to the Kará believers in the village of Laranjal that God's word also reaches the other villages. The missions to the surrounding villages are carried out with boats, which were financed by the Faith Hope Love mission, among others. Of course, these also require the appropriate fuel for the long journeys on the large rivers. These missions take place regularly. Since the villages are far apart, only one settlement is visited per week. Various Brazilian and indigenous communities visit the Kará regularly. These evangelism missions take place alongside the work of Isaac and Shirley. The Kará community was largely non-denominational. It was important to the missionaries that they were not influenced by any doctrines, but that they really got to know God and his plan of salvation through his word. After a long time and much deliberation, without outside influence, the Kará themselves decided on a community name: Presbyterian Community of the Ugorongmo. In addition, Isaac and Shirley also provide medical assistance to the Kará, who have little access to the health system. They help with skin rashes, worm infections, etc. In this context, there is good cooperation with the official authorities in Brazil, who support the work of Isaac and Shirley. * The name has been changed for security reasons.
